- Small plane makes hard landing on B.C. highway during rush hour
Police say engine failure forced a small plane to land on Highway 91 south of 64th Avenue during the Wednesday afternoon rush hour.
RCMP Cpl. Peter Sommerville said the pilot has a sore back because it was a very hard landing, but no other vehicles were involved and there were no other injuries.
"It was rush-hour traffic so the possibilities were very big as to what could have happened, but he [the pilot] was able to bring it down in a fairly controlled yet hard landing," says RCMP Cpl. Peter Sommerville.
"A couple of witnesses say they saw a small plane coming behind them in their rear view mirrors ... and they were like 'what's going on, is this really happening,' so they started slowing down and that created a gap where he was able to bring down his plane."
The incident caused the closure of southbound lanes in the area, creating some trouble with traffic as vehicles were diverted around the crash site. All lanes reopened around 9 p.m. PT.
