RCMP have made an arrest after a six-year-old girl was airlifted to hospital in Edmonton following an assault on an Alberta reserve.

The girl was found Saturday afternoon lying in the snow on the Paul Band First Nation, west of Edmonton. Family members told CBC News the girl was suffering from hypothermia and was beaten so badly that relatives didn't initially recognize her.

The girl was flown to hospital by STARS air ambulance at around 5 p.m. MT. A spokesperson said the girl had blunt force trauma, but could not say what caused the injuries.

The girl is now in stable but critical condition, according to RCMP.

The identities of the girl and the person arrested have not been released. Charges are pending.
